Major themes of the Enlightenment, including liberty and slavery, the basis for just governance, the development of scientific knowledge, the emergence of human sciences, etc. Analysis of Newton's science as a model for human and social sciences. Authors include Mary Astell, John Locke, Isaac Newton, Emilie du Châtelet, David Hume, Immanuel Kant, Voltaire, and Mary Shepherd. Scholarship from influential authors like Ernst Cassirer, Robert Darnton, Lorraine Daston, and Margaret Jacob.
