How has being a Philosophy graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"My degree in Philosophy from Duke has helped me tremendously both personally and professionally. It taught me how to organize my thoughts into sound arguments, and it helped train me to be a better writer. My work in Mathematical Logic helped enormously in my career as a software engineer. My grounding in the History of Philosophy allowed me to have a deeper understanding of contemporary political discourse. On a personal level, Philosophy also helped me to attain greater clarity and direction on the moral, spiritual, religious, and existential questions of my life."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Philosophy programs?

"When I was at Duke, I did not worry about the "cash value" of a Philosophy Degree after graduation. My goal was to master the discipline and learn its history. Any missing "practical" elements in your resume that the job market requires can be easily filled after graduation with a little hustle. But you will not have another chance to sit with Duke professors to study Philosophy as an undergraduate."
