Philosophy of Sport

PHIL 226

Play, sport, and game in western culture: sport and leisure, sport vs. athletics, discipline of the body, spectatorship, the amateur and the professional. Course deals with ethical context and implications of competition and the urge to win, with sport as rule-governed behavior. Also examines significance of infractions of the rules, associated penalties, and ethical issues like cheating, performance-enhancing substances in sport, concept of the 'team' and ideals of individual performance.
