How has being a Philosophy graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"It is one of the five-or-thereabouts things that has been most helpful to my survival and ability to help others."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Philosophy programs?

"In the long run, at least a few of your philosophy classmates might prove to be among the crème de la crème of the people you meet in your life. At least two of them in my life were clearly among the best of the best: a man who was one year ahead of me and attended Dr. Alisdair MacIntyre's "Ancient and Modern Ethical Theories" class with me and went on to work for the federal government and a woman who was three years ahead of me and attended Dr. Lynn Joy's "Introduction to Modern Philosophy" class with me and went on to work in the publishing industry."
