1990 Major: Philosophy

How has being a Philosophy graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"I hadn't imagined, either when I was an undergrad at Duke or completing my PhD in philosophy at Tulane, that I would end up a hospice chaplain. And yet! The ability to sit with someone and carefully listen to what they're saying, extrapolate conclusions that they themselves may not have realized, was honed through my study of philosophy. It's also helped with ethical issues that my team (and the wider hospice community) encounters, as well as dealing with the existential issues that come with dealing with death on a daily basis."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Philosophy programs? 

"Be open to the possibilities that come your way."
