How has being a Philosophy graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"Philosophy at Duke taught me how to think, how to be a skeptic, how to read and how to write. It's remarkable how often these skills are called upon in life. In addition to providing the intellectual tool kit needed to succeed in medicine, my philosophy training at Duke has allowed me to better appreciate the notions that go unquestioned in life, and challenge them appropriately. This has led to a very enjoyable and engaging existence. I also made friends in my Philosophy classes that I'm still in touch with today...one of whom is James Mahon, who was an inspiring grad student and TA in the late 90's and who is now a successful academician, philosopher and dean."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Philosophy programs?

"You have chosen wisely. Seek out coursework that will make you think and push yourself...and take the time that is needed to properly digest the course material. Once you grow as an undergraduate Philosophy student, you can put those skills to use in virtually any discipline or profession on the planet. Also, one final pro tip. If you choose to bring a contraband pet ferret into class to illustrate a point during a debate on animal minds and it walks over and gets comfortable in the corner of the room during the discussion, bring it outside...quickly."
