Undergraduate Program

Philosophy provides a sound preparation for the demands of many professions. For example, the precision of argument and broad acquaintance with intellectual traditions emphasized in philosophy form an excellent basis for the study of law. However, the intellectual rigor that philosophy instills would be useful in professions as disparate as medicine and business.

The Department offers a major and minor, and is one of the sponsors of the PPE (Politics, Philosophy, and Economics) certificate. Philosophy-based programs [local link] are also offered through Study Abroad. [link to study abroad office] Course offerings in Philosophy fall into two general categories: the systematic, which includes courses that focus on the problems presented by the particular subject matter (e.g., ethics, metaphysics), and the historical, which includes courses that focus on the development in the views of a particular historical figure (e.g., Aristotle, Kant) or of thought in a particular historical period (e.g., ancient, modern).
