Evolution and Human Nature

Examination of attempts to apply evolutionary theory to human behavior/human social systems (now called human sociobiology). Readings from Charles Darwin to mid-20th century with selections from ethologist Konrad Lorenz and evolutionary biologist Theodosius Dobzhansky. Also studies contemporary sociobiology, ending with critiques of human sociobiology, especially nature/nurture controversy. Open only to students in the Focus program. Consent of instructor required. One course.
